TFTs with Optical Bonding
September 15, 2014 / Press Release , Displays
GTK announced the availability of standard TFT displays with optical bonding for enhanced readability in outdoor environments.
The production process involves using optically bonding adhesive to fix a protective, glass cover lens to the front of a display. This enhances the contrast ratio and is particularly beneficial where there is bright sunlight or high humidity.
Optical bonding provides a number of additional benefits, including increased ruggedness of the display and protection against condensation, as the air gap between the cover glass and the display is eliminated. This prevents moisture penetrating the gap, which can cause fogging on the display’s surface.
Clive Dickinson, business manager for optoelectronics at GTK, said, "Optical bonding really improves the robustness and durability of TFT displays and can extend their life in harsh outdoor environments. We supply toughened glass lenses for extra durability and the costs of this technology are not prohibitive when you consider the many benefits they provide over the life of the product."
GTK can provide optical bonding on TFT display sizes ranging from 2.4" to 10.1", and the technology can be used with either resistive or capacitive touchscreens.
