Embedded DisplayPort combines high speeds and low power in a versatile display interface
May 21, 2024 / Press Release , Displays
For OEMs designing a display, selecting the right interface technology is crucial, and one interface that is becoming increasingly popular in industrial applications is Embedded DisplayPort, or eDP.
Based on the DisplayPort standard, eDP interfaces offer several performance advantages for TFT displays over older interface options like RGB and LVDS.
Its main advantage is that the eDP signal is the native display output from chipsets on embedded boards. This means that no additional conversion is needed to process the video signal, freeing up headroom and power requirements.
eDP also offers a faster data transfer speed than more mature technologies, supporting higher refresh rates and display resolutions, while maintaining a better signal integrity. eDP also provides support for advanced features like HDR (High Dynamic Range), deep colour depths, and wide colour gamuts, as well as Adaptive Sync to match the display's refresh rate to the content.
eDP doesn't need as many signal wires as other interface types, and delivers a lower power consumption, making it ideal for mobile, battery-operated systems. Additionally, being based on the DisplayPort standard means that an eDP interface on an embedded board can support multiple independent displays.
In recent years, the eDP interface has become more widespread in industrial sectors such as security, automation and the medical market, and this trend is set to continue. Applications like audio consoles, industrial tablets, weighing scales and healthcare devices are all beginning to feature embedded DisplayPort interfaces that drive high-performance displays.
GTK has recently added two new displays with an embedded interface to its range of IPS TFT displays - one 7.0" TFT and one 10.1" TFT. These would suit any number of commercial and industrial applications, and the company can also support an extensive range of customisation options to fine-tune the optical performance of the displays, as well as the overall UX of the application. GTK's team of technical product experts is on hand to work with customers to design and supply a complete display solution that delivers on their specific requirements.
